Root Canal Treatment
What is root canal treatment? Active Dental focuses on improving the overall
health of our patients by diagnosing, treating and preventing conditions associated with your teeth and gums.
Root canal treatment (also called Endodontic treatment) is involved in the saving of an infected tooth. Its purpose is to conserve
a tooth that has been damaged by decay, fracture or an abscess and normal restorative procedures are no longer possible. In the past, you would probably lose a tooth if the tooth had a diseased or injured nerve.
Some indications root canal treatment may be required include:
• Lingering tooth sensitivity to cold liquids
• Lingering tooth sensitivity to hot liquids
• Tooth sensitivity to sweets
• Tooth pain to biting pressure
• Impulsive toothache, such as that experienced while reading a book, walking or other normal daily activities
• Constant or intermittent tooth pain
• Severe tooth pain
• Throbbing tooth pain
• Tooth pain that may occur in response to atmospheric pressure changes such as when flying or scuba diving
• Tissue swelling of the face
Extraction
An extraction is truly the last resort
As an alternative to an extraction, the goal of root canal treatment is to save the tooth and allow it to be retained in the mouth for
many years in a state of health, function and comfort.
Root Canal Treatment concerns the treatment of the dental pulp. The pulp is made up of nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue, which are important in tooth development. Root canal treatment stops the toothache, prevents bacteria and pain from spreading
into the bone, which could eventually lead to tooth and bone loss.
Length of treatment Treatment usually consists of 1 to 3 visits. First visit involves the removal of the tooth pulp, cleansing and medication of the tooth
canals. Second visit is to complete cleansing and change medication in the root canals. Finally, the third visit requires the filling and
sealing of canals. After root canal treatment is complete, most teeth require a crown to reinforce the structure of the tooth and to
protect against a fracture of the remaining tooth enamel.
Prevention is better than cure The best way to avoid root canal treatment is to take good daily care of your teeth. Brushing and flossing are important. Just as important are regular visits to our practice so we may check for the first sign of decay or cracks that
could eventually lead to an infected tooth.
